The Rift Valley
Lake Nakuru: Rhino Sanctuary and Soda Lake
Lake Nakuru is a shallow, alkaline lake on the floor of the Great Rift Valley, ringed by acacia woodland and yellow-barked fever trees, and enclosed by an electric fence. That fence is the reason the park matters: it has made Nakuru one of Kenya's most important rhino sanctuaries, holding both black and white rhino in numbers that make sightings genuinely likely rather than merely possible.
The lake was for decades world-famous for flamingos — photographs of a million birds turning the shoreline pink defined the park. Rising water levels over the past decade have changed the algae the birds feed on, and many flamingos have moved to other Rift Valley lakes. Some remain, and the flocks can still be impressive, but anyone travelling specifically for the flamingo spectacle should ask us what the lake is doing before booking.
Beyond the rhino, the park holds Rothschild's giraffe, introduced here for protection, plus lion, leopard, buffalo and large numbers of waterbuck. Baboon Cliff gives a view over the whole basin.

Lake Nakuru Highlights
Black and white rhino
One of Kenya's most successful rhino sanctuaries, fenced and closely protected, where sightings of both species are realistic in a single visit.
Rothschild's giraffe
A rare subspecies translocated here for its protection, distinguishable by its white lower legs and now breeding successfully.
Waterbirds and flamingos
Still an excellent birding site with pelicans, storks and cormorants in numbers, and flamingos present in varying quantities as lake levels shift.
Easy access from Nairobi
Around three hours by road through the Rift Valley, which makes Nakuru the natural first or last stop on a Kenyan circuit.

Are the flamingos still there?
Fewer than the famous photographs suggest. Rising lake levels have diluted the alkalinity and changed the algae the lesser flamingo feeds on, and large numbers have relocated to Lake Bogoria and Lake Elmenteita. Flamingos are still present and the flocks can be substantial, but the million-bird spectacle is not currently reliable. Ask us for a current picture before making it the reason for your visit.
How long should I spend at Nakuru?
One or two nights. The park is compact and can be covered in a day, and it works best as a stop between Nairobi and the Masai Mara rather than a destination in itself. Two nights suits anyone particularly keen on rhino or birds, or wanting to add Lake Naivasha and its boat trips nearby.
Is it good for a first safari?
As part of a circuit, yes. Nakuru offers rhino, which the Mara struggles to deliver, plus easy access and a beautiful Rift Valley setting. It is not a substitute for the Mara — predator viewing and sheer scale are far lower — but the two complement each other well and the drive between them is straightforward.
